Opinions/experiences of Garra Rufa Fish pedicures?

Question by Keira: Opinions/experiences of Garra Rufa Fish pedicures?
I was walking through a shopping mall (in the UK) and was handed a professional looking leaflet about Garra Rufa fish pedicures. I’m not sure what to think, but would like to know your opinions and experiences.

Is cruel to the fish?
Does it hurt your feet?
Is it hygenic?

Its is NOt hygienic at all, they were doing it in some cities in the US in some nail places, but it was almost immediately shut down because it’s just not normal and not hygienic.
In order for fish to survive no chemicals can be added to their natural habitat or they will die, so there for all the bacteria is not getting killed and I’m sure would end up all over you.

i had one done last week… it tickled at first but then i found it relaxing….i don’t think its cruel

It is not cruel, it’s very natural for them. In their own environment they would be nibbling the algae from rock and shells.
It doesn’t hurt as they don’t have any teeth, it has been likened to gentle vibrating bubbles.
As for hygiene, I can’t vouch for every fish spa but in mine, the feet are inspected and thoroughly washed, any infectious diseases then you would not be allowed to use the spa.
The water is constantly filtered through a UV steriliser, around 8 times an hour.
The water is crystal clear!
It is banned in approx a 1/4 of the states of USA as a rule in the health and beauty industry says that you must clean and sterilise every tool between treatments, as you can’t physically clean and sterilise fish, some have chosen to ban it but not all.
