I am going to thin this nail out and apply acrylic to the top to make the nail look normal. Note: I would not add acrylic to the nail if I thought she had nail fungus caused by yeast, mold or athletes foot. Because it would make it worse. signs I know it is safe to add the acrylic is the nail is 1- the nail is not lifted from the nail bed, 2- it doesn’t have a while appearance 3- the nail is not thickened from nail fungus because there is a clear line of demarcation and it is not invading any nail past that line, this situation it is called onychodystrophy which means the nail is misshapen caused from damage to recap my conversation with her- She had some trauma to this nail years ago, and the nail fell off and grew back, she thought she had nail fungus, and it fell off again, this is how it has grown out since then. The color you see in the nail that won’t come off with the nail polish remover is nail polish that has seeped down into the cracks and layers of the damaged nail. There is no way for me to get all of that out without filing the nail really thin and there is no need to do that. I am going to disinfect the nail plate to make sure nothing gets trapped under the acrylic we are going to apply to create the illusion of a smooth nail.

My preferred product for nail reconstruction is acrylic. Let me tell you why. You can control acrylic and depend on the kind of acrylic you use, it will have a fast set time or a slower set time. I use a faster set up acrylic and you can find all the products I use on my online store. Acrylic is faster to apply there is no light needed to cure it and it will not run down into the sidewalls. It is safe for the toes, it will not break as easy as gel, gel is pliable in the summer and brittle in the winter. The product you choose to use is up to you. The client no matter what product they have on their nail must know they need to shorten the nail so it doesn’t hit the end of their shoe and cause additional issues.

Do not let marketing strategies to sell gel products ver you away from using acrylic.

An example of a marketing strategy is to say acrylic isn’t safe for toes because monomer shouldn’t come into contact with the skin when you use acrylic you use a liquid monomer to pick up the polymer powder to form your catalyst product that will air dry and cure. However, the monomer is mixed right into every gel product and when cured, with an LED or UV lamp, to form a catalyst, causes a heat spike. So again, the choice is yours, one is not better than the other.
